When GLADES started out, they were really good at writing sad, break-up songs. They eventually wanted to flip the switch and do a positive track for once, so they wrote “Drive.”
It ended up becoming a masterpiece.
This song has been a worldwide hit since its release. As their first EP’s most well-known song, “Drive” reached a level of popularity where people don’t even realize that they know the song until they hear it again. During the San Francisco concert, where GLADES was mostly an unknown opening act, the moment that the band started playing “Drive,” the entire crowd recognized the song and erupted in cheers. People were ecstatic that they actually did know the band. Twenty million streams in less than a year don’t lie.
The lyrics are beautifully deep, yet comprehensible. The music is so complex, yet easy to listen to. Joey starts the chord progression on the keyboard, setting the foundation of the song. Cam comes in with accompanying guitar riffs and chords sprinkled throughout, following right behind Karina’s voice as she takes the listener on a poetic journey. The lyrics themselves depict powerful imagery, wrapped in real-life events (e.g.: Dancing in the color of the golden light). The song paints a picture of love that is both comfortable and exciting. You can easily imagine the singer’s infatuation, especially in the chorus. She is describing her joy while simultaneously experiencing it.
The third verse (Freeze time when…) alone is likely my favorite stanza of all time. The most gracefully written set of rhymes ever. To me, it describes the perfect moment where two people are present with each other and able to experience complete love.
